Focus: Strengthen the student's physical function within the school environment
Physical therapy can be highly effective in assisting a child when physical difficulties limit their ability to learn. Physical therapists help students strengthen their abilities so they can participate more fully in school activities. Physical therapy might aim to achieve one or more of the following:
- Ensure physical safety and access to all parts of the school environment
- Improve strength, flexibility and posture
- Enhance mobility
- Improve balance
- Improve coordination
- Improve a student's ability to use physical skills in many learning environments
- Develop or improve specific physical skills (e.g., ball skills, jumping, hopping, etc.)
- Maximize participation in physical education class
- Improve participation and skills when using playground equipment
The physical therapist works with staff members at the child's school to establish goals, plan treatments if required, and review progress. Treatment is short-term and customized to individual needs. Group programming may be used to enhance a student's participation and provide opportunities for teachers to participate in programming sessions.
The best results happen when parents/legal guardians are able to:
- Team with the classroom teacher to discuss their child's needs
- Participate in initial/progress meetings or phone conversations
- Practice new skills with their child
- Work together with their child's school to try out new ideas
Parents/legal guardians are encouraged to contact any member of their child's team with any questions they may have.
