The school is the gateway to Student Health Partnership (SHP) services.  Services are available for any student with an identified health-related learning need*, who is registered in any school program from ECS to Grade 12, and who meets the following criteria:

  • The student's health needs impact their educational outcomes.
  • The student is not currently receiving public sector service from another provider that supports an identified health-related learning need within the school environment.
  • The student does not require crisis intervention**.

Services available through the Student Health Partnership (SHP) are limited and are not designed to be long term.  Whenever possible SHP services will be provided within the school environment.  Priority may be given to students not previously served.

Please note that the above are guidelines and that each student's situation will be judged on an individual basis within the context of each school system and community.

The school team is essential in coordinating SHP services within the child's school environment. Teachers collaborate with health professionals to support students in achieving their educational goals. Generally, services are delivered in the school.

Communication Guidelines:

All partners working collaboratively to meet a student's health-related learning needs acknowledge the following:

  1. Every parent/legal guardian has the right to contact the teacher and/or therapist directly to inquire about their child's progress and service plan.
  2. Existing supervisory/communication protocols of the partners will be used when communicating about SHP service delivery.
  3. The teacher(s), therapist(s), assistant(s) and parent/legal guardian(s) involved will develop a communication plan as part of the student's service plan.

The highest levels of student health need identified by school communities have continued to be in the areas of emotional-behavioral support and rehabilitation services, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language therapy.

For further information, please connect with school personnel.

Generally, SHP does not address complex needs, long term service and health issues that do not impact learning. Services or costs that are not eligible for funding through Student Health are:

  • population or public health services intended to benefit all students, not just those with identified special health needs; e.g., immunization, dental health, reproductive health and control of infectious diseases
  • broad-based prevention programs not directed to identified students with special health needs; e.g., school-wide bully proofing program or classroom-wide language development program
  • services that are not identified in the student's IPP or student's service plan
  • academic turoring

Each school or school jurisdiction looks at their needs and determines the limited SHP resources would be best used.  SHP is one resource out of a large provincial network of services available to students and families. If you need further clarification, please contact your child's school.
